I am a non-European citizen who has lived in Italy for many years. Can I take citizenship?

Yes. Citizenship can also be requested by foreigners who have been residing in Italy for at least ten years and meet certain requirements. In particular, the applicant must prove that they have sufficient income to support themselves, that they do not have a criminal record, and that they do not have any obstacles to the security of the Republic.

The documentation required to start the application is as follows:

Birth certificate translated and legalised (or with Apostille if the State has an agreement)
Criminal certificate translated and legalised (or with Apostille if the State has an agreement with it) ATTENTION: the criminal certificate is valid for a maximum of 6 months from its issue
Italian identity card
Residence permit
Passport of the country of citizenship
CUD for the last three years prior to application
Certificate of knowledge of the Italian language OR long-term residence permit
Self-certification of family status
History of residence in Italy

Since 2007, the EU long-term resident’s permit has replaced the so-called ‘carta di soggiorno’. In order to obtain it, one must have been legally residing in Italy for at least five years and not constitute a danger to public order and State security.

The application may also be presented for

the spouse who is not legally separated and not younger than eighteen years of age.
minor children, including those of the spouse or born out of wedlock.
dependent children aged 18 or over who cannot permanently provide for their essential living needs due to their state of health resulting in total disability.
dependent parents.

I am a foreign student in Italy; however, I am now working. Can I change my residence permit?

The conversion of a residency permit is an administrative procedure through which a foreign national, who is already authorised to reside in the Italian territory, requests a residency permit for a new reason other than the original one, if the conditions provided for by law are met.

Generally speaking, SI is possible to change a residency permit if one falls into the categories and meets the requirements. There are various types of conversion, the most common being the conversion from ‘study reasons’ to ‘subordinate work’; or the conversion from ‘seasonal work’ to ‘subordinate work’.
